Story of the Week: Nice to meet you!

I have an interesting one for us. The other day I sat down to play at a table, business as usual and to my surprise I seemed to have a spectator quite interested in my play and for once it wasn’t a suspicious dealer or pit boss. In fact it was the player next to me.

Several hands were dealt and I continued to make regular basic strategy moves while patiently waiting for the count to go up. An A,7 was dealt and I hit against the dealers 9 and that’s when the player next to me commented that they were a little impressed that I knew perfect basic strategy and that a lot of people didn’t. I thought this to be a little strange so I payed more attention to their play.

To my surprise as the count fluctuated along with my bet spread so did the other player’s! Oh wow, I excitedly said to myself. Another counter! Coincidentally, the count seemed to grow aggressively towards the end of the shoe and I was dealt one hand of 9,9 and another hand of T,T. It was a true count of seven and the dealer showed a 5. Obviously I split my 9,9 and that’s when something weird happened. A red light showed on the shuffler and the pit boss had to count all the cards manually which seemed to take forever. I secretly thought that maybe this was the casinos attempt to frustrate me in their possible suspicion of me being a counter that frequented their property because this seemed to happen the last few times I played there.

Anyways while waiting for what seemed an eternity I realized that with the distraction of the game coming to a hault because of the unfortunate”malfunction” of the shuffler I forgot to buy in for more money so that I could split my TENS!!! As I proceeded to do so the dealer just seemed to look at me like I was crazy and the other players at the table got a little upset and made faces like they all had to pick a bad Wedgy. Everyone except the player next to me that is.

He just looked at me and smiled. When the game finally began again and the dealer dealt the next card he dealt me a five on my first ten. My first nine I believe I had a 15 my second nine I believe I had a 17 I know for sure he dealt me a five on my first 10 and proceeded to deal me an 8 on my second 10 so the whole tables attitude changed when they realized I had just stopped the dealer from having a 20. When the dealer flipped his first card he revealed a 10 and the second card he dealt was another 10 to bust out with 25 and the rest of table went crazy.

The player next to me clapped their hands and said bravo great play and as the dealer began to pay out the table including myself the other counter just looked at me and said we should get out of here and that’s exactly what we did. Who would’ve thought that just another day at the blackjack table I would make a new friend who also happens to be a counter. “Nice to meet you” were the last words I spoke before we went our separate ways.
